Our destination for the day - Twining Peak   Friday, September 21, 2001: Our destination for the day - Twining Peak. Located about two miles north of Independence Pass on the Continental Divide, it is a relatively easy hike to the summit at 13,711 feet above sea level.
About half way there ... for Terese it was just another hike.   About half way there ... for Terese it was just another hike.
With about a half mile to go - this was the steepest part of the climb.   With about a half mile to go - this was the steepest part of the climb.

As often happens, I arrived upon the summit of the mountain several minutes before Terese. Around noon, she joined me at the top and upon seeing nothing special happening, she once again thought, "I climbed another mountain - and again - NOTHING!"

Moments later, I began to reminisce ... about our first date, how I couldn't believe that it was HER, how being on top of a mountain makes me feel as though I am on the top of the world and how she makes me feel as if I'm on top of the world at all times. And then it happened.

I dropped to one knee and asked the question. "Will you marry me?"

She replied "Yes".

Upon hearing these words, I slipped the ring on to her finger and then I stood up and yelled from the mountaintop, "She said yes! She said yes!"

There were no other hikers in sight on any of the trails below nor on any of the nearby mountaintops to hear my excited words.

Terese is now wearing an engagement ring.   She said "yes"! Terese is now wearing an engagement ring.

After we hugged, and kissed, and reveled in the moment, we finally regrouped and set up the tripod for the camera and took the following photos to share with you.

Although we didn't get a photo - nor could you see them in the photo if we did take a picture, on our way back down the mountain we at one time found that we had walked into an area and were surrounded by six ptarmigans who had begun to change colors from brown to white. We interpreted this sighting as some sort of sign of good luck for our future together.

ptarmigan (tr'mî-gén): Any of various grouses of the genus Lagopus, inhabiting arctic, subarctic, and alpine regions of the Northern Hemisphere and having feathered legs and feet and plumage that is brown or gray in summer and white in winter.

That's one extremely happy girl on the way back down.   That's one extremely happy girl on the way back down. I was pretty happy too!

We finished out our day with a drive down the west side of Independence Pass to enjoy the Aspen trees in full autumn color. Once in the town of Aspen, we had a late lunch at Cooper Street Pier where we were lucky enough to obtain one of their few outdoor tables.
